Just as Sam is settling into his life of crime, he gets a call to go to Japan to supervise a huge special effect gag. Back to work. Sam leaves Los Angeles at just the right time as L.A.P.D. detective Wayne Morris is hot on his trail.
In Japan Sam and the other Hollywood filmmakers experience a culture shock they were never prepared for as they try and deal with the mysterious ways of their Japanese counterparts. Soon Sam is caught up in the temptation of the multi-million dollar cash payroll that will be sitting in an unguarded safe during the first day of shooting. The enticement to return to his recent life of crime weighs heavily on him as he becomes more and more enamored of his host country and its culture.

Loved the humor and the clash of characters from polar opposite cultures. Read like a great non-fiction novel. Newport creates an atmosphere that allows you to identify with a lead character who is reckless, irreverent, desperate but a hell of a lot of fun to journey with through this maze of misunderstanding. I recommend it to anyone who curious about other cultures as well as anyone looking for a can't put down beautifully crafted yarn.
Things aren't going well for Hollywood Special Effects man Sam Grannit. Once high on every director's list of guys who can be trusted to deliver realistic explosions on cue, Sam's phone hasn't rung for the better part of a year, his ego and bank account have been decimated, and he's been reduced to surviving by robbing film productions on crew payday. Salvation, such as it is, appears to come in the form of a desperate call from a director at the helm of an out-of-control Hollywood film production about an American baseball star, about to shoot in Tokyo. The production is a train wreck and so is Sam, and author, Jim Newport, a veteran Hollywood production designer who has worked all over the world, can spin a yarn with the best and also knows first-hand the kind insanities which invariably visit themselves on overseas movie sets. A quick read, anyone with an interest in film and Hollywood will enjoy Yankee Dragon and find themselves coming away a taste of the on-the-ground realities of motion picture production in a fashion not taught in film school.
